Practical Truths in the Book of Jonah by Joseph S Exell.
The author is well-known for his Biblical illustrations, and as the principal editor of and a contributor to ‘The Preacher’s Homiletical Commentary.’ This book, is different and precedes his work in The Preacher’s Homiletical Commentary, and this volume was first published in 1874. It is a verse-by-verse study similar in the style to J C Ryle, and many comments begin with statements which suggest a pastoral application.
Throughout the book, in virtually every paragraph, Exell highlights a significant truth, principle, or application, and it also effectively presents the Divine lessons of the book. This is a first-class treatment of the Book of Jonah, the prophet entered into contention with his Lord, and the author in this work reinforces the accuracy of the work, and its place in scripture. It’s a volume which is suitable for use as a commentary or a book for reading, but it would make an excellent, devotional gift for any believer.
