These chapters had their genesis in twelve expository sermons preached at Hayes Town Chapel, Middlesex in 1993-4. They were preached in connection with pastoral needs in the congregation, and in particular the personal adversities through which the author and his family were passing at the time. The reason for publishing these addresses in this revised format is the pressure brought to bear by friends who heard them, together with the desire that God may be pleased to use them to ‘succour those who are being tried.’ When we as Christians grapple theologically, practically, and experientially with the reality of affliction, no portion of Scripture is more helpful than Hebrews 12:1-13. This book sure-footedly guides us into the depths of this marvellous passage. We emerge with our eyes fixed on Jesus as our elder brother and our hearts comforted with the truth that our heavenly Father trains us lovingly, firmly, and perfectly in his gymnasium as adopted sons. Read this book now so that you will be better equipped to handle affliction when it comes; read it again when affliction strikes; and give a copy to every sorely afflicted Christian friend you know.
