Jennifer Winslow was a spoiled New York socialite until the stock market crash of 1929 and that forced her family to move to a small farm in Georgia.
Through a series of remarkable events she now finds herself running for country sheriff.
She also discovers fierce enemies among the local moon-shiners who are in league with the city mobsters and even many of the law-abiding citizens scoff at the idea of a female sheriff.
Among her few supporters there are two men she is drawn to an idealistic young lawyer and a reluctant deputy.
